I Didn't Need Another Job. I Needed to Understand Myself.

7:00 a.m. came quickly. Sometimes too quickly.

I would sit in my car knowing what came next: walk inside, clock in, and begin another day. My body knew the routine. My mind kept asking the same question: Is this really how I want to spend my time?

For a long time, I thought the answer was another job. If I didn't feel fulfilled where I was, I assumed I needed to find somewhere else. Maybe the next position would fit. Maybe the next environment would feel better. Maybe I would finally find work that felt connected to who I was.

But I kept arriving at the same question.

Eventually, I realized I wasn't only searching for better work. I was searching for a better understanding of myself.

I had experienced work that mattered to me. I had spent years as an interpreter and knew what it felt like to connect my work to something meaningful. I had also experienced seasons when work no longer fit, even when it looked reasonable from the outside. The pattern became clearer: I felt most alive when I felt connected to what I was doing. I felt most drained when I felt disconnected from myself.

That changed the question.

Instead of asking, What job should I have? I started asking, What kind of life am I trying to build?

What do I value? What kind of environment brings out the best in me? What do I want my time to make room for? What am I building beyond a paycheck?

Those questions didn't give me immediate answers. They gave me something more important: honesty.

I could understand the practical reasons for taking a job. I could understand the paycheck, the responsibilities, and the security it might provide. But understanding those things didn't create connection. I didn't want to spend my days doing work that felt foreign to me simply because it could finance the life I wanted outside of it.

I wanted the way I spent my time to have meaning, too.

I'm still figuring that out.

But I'm no longer convinced that every restless season requires a new job.

Sometimes it requires a deeper question.

What kind of life am I building, and what role does work have in it?

Pause & Reflect

Am I looking for a new opportunity, or am I trying to understand what I actually want?
